Xander's Chance (#1, Damian Eternal)

Xander's Chance ebooklgAs the single-most powerful vampire on the planet, Xander is the ultimate bored predator with too much time on his hands. He manipulates the minds of immortals for fun and bullies around the Gods, while guarding the secret source of his power, a crystal that can wipe out the planet. But beneath the surface, he’s a shrewd creature who learned the brutal lesson of why there must be a balance between good and evil. An unwilling protector of the playthings known as humans, he knows when and where to use his power – and never to let anyone close enough to betray him. It’s easy to do, since he has the power to read the minds of everyone around him.
Except for one: Jessi, an innocent looking woman with an unusual talent who shows up unexpectedly in his life. Her sudden appearance is too convenient to be coincidence or chance. Xander determines quickly that she was sent by someone, but he can’t read her mind to discover why.
Jessi’s secret – and Xander’s – have the power to forever change the human world. Intrigued by a new sort of challenge, Xander won’t know how much danger he’s in, until he’s placed his fate in the hands of a woman whose betrayal will cost either his heart or his life

Exley.

This week's mailbox is a emptier than usual, but I prefer showing you what I got now, even if it's not that much.

Me and my mother have been clearing our shelves of books we felt we no longer wanted to keep. Some of them are going to my 11 year-old cousin, some were given away to poor people who make a living out of selling old books. But when my mother stumbled upon an old Romanian edition copy of "Lady Chatterley's Lover" by D.H. Lawrence who used to belong to my great-grandmother, the words ran out of my mouth: "I want it!". And so, my mother passed it down on me.

In terms of ebooks, things have been normal. I received "ReVamped" and "Lost in Thought" from the authors. From NetGalley, I got "Gameboard of the Gods" by Richelle Mead and "Nefertiti's Heart" by A.W. Exley. In addition to these, I got "Frost Arch" by Kate Bloomfield, as a Kindle freebie.

What new books do you have? :)

Recenzia mea

vanilla-rating-5-stars

My review

vanilla-rating-5-stars

When I started this book I was already in love with Lizzy Ford's Witchling Trilogy and I would have never imagined there was a possibility Rhyn might take its place as my favourite LF book series. I read the book in two days, something I rarely manage to do, since I am in the final year of highschool and have a lot of studying to do.

I have been reading a lot of Paranormal Romance lately, from vampire to witches novels, and it is very refreshing when I discover books with supernatural creatures so unique as the Rhyn Trilogy has. We have demons, angels and Immortals - blood eating beings similar to angels, protectors of the human race.

My favourite aspect about this book is how real the characters seem to be. They are easy to love, and make you really care about what happens to them, especially Katie and Rhyn. I especially liked how their relationship develops throughout the book, from hate to acceptance, and finally love.

Katie is a very strong character. It's incredible how she manages to keep her sanity when the world as she knew it is crushing down. It's really hard for me not to give you spoilers on what happens to her, but I think you will love her character as much as I did. Rhyn, on the other hand, was not to my liking at first. But after reading about his background, it all made sense and I actually found myself cheering up for him. It's one of those characters that you sometimes want to punch at some point, but you can't help loving him at the same time.

I am already used to Lizzy Ford's writing style and I must say I love it. You can tell she has writing in her blood, as her books keep you glued to them. Full of incredible action, amazing characters and unique stories - what's not to like? A must-read for any Paranormal Romance fan.

Alison Can Read Feature & FollowHello everybody! This is the first time I am participating in the Follow Friday hop, but I hope it will become a habit in the future. If you don't know anything about this blog hop and/or want to find out how you can participate, check the rules here!

Basically, each Friday a blog is featured by the two hosts, Allison Can Read and Parajunkee. Participants to the blog hop have to follow the hosts and the Featured blogs and add their link to the list. This way, they can make new friends and follow each other. It's really fun! And also, there is a weekly question so everything is even more interesting.

Q: We always talk about books that WE want. Let's turn it on its head. What books have you given other people lately?

Well, just today, I have gifted an e-copy of Lost in Thought by Cara Bertrand to Meghan Stith, the lucky winner of my latest giveaway. I have also gifted an e-copy of Illuminate by Aimee Agretsi to Miruna Maura, one of my friends last week.

I haven't yet read these two books, but I own them in ebook format and are on my list of to-be-read.

And on a table, more than 50 Children's books are waiting to be picked up my uncle and to be given to my 11 year-old cousin, who may be turning into a bookworm himself in the future (thanks to me and his mom).

Review: Ballet Shoes - Noel Streatfeild

12:06 2 Comments
This article is Bilingual. To switch between RO and ENG, click on the tabs from the left side of the article.

Pauline, was rescued from a shipwreck as a baby. She longs to be an actress. Petrova, is a Russian orphan. She is happiest when playing with cars and engines. Posy was handed over with just a pair of ballet shoes to her name. If she could, she would dance all day! But one thing they DO have in common is, that with money running out at home and Great Uncle Matthew missing, the sisters want to stay together. Whatever it takes. As they prepare for a dazzling life on stage, the dreams and fears of the fossil girls are about to come true...

Gen: Literatură clasică, britanică, pentru copii
Lungime: 240 de pagini
Publicată prima dată în 1936.

Recenzia mea

vanilla-rating-4-stars

My Review

vanilla-rating-4-stars

I must admit that what first got me interested in this book was seeing the movie with Emma Watson as Pauline in 2007. However, six years have passed until I actually decided: I want to read this book. Another important factor in my decision to read it was also the Pre-1960's Classic Children's Books Reading Challenge hosted by Turning the Pages I am participating in this year. But how and why I read this book is not as important as how great it turned out to be!

From the first sentence, I felt transported to the time I was ten and reading books like "The Secret Garden" or "Little Women". There is a certain feel these old children's books have and nostalgia accompanied me until the last page. It seems that my fear of not liking children's books at my age was unfounded.

If other girls had to be one of us, which would they choose?

Pauline was by far my favourite character, perhaps because she was the oldest of the three children, and thus more mature, a leader if I can call her like that. Rational, ambitious, learning from her past mistakes, unaware of her beauty and ready to sacrifice her savings to help paying the bills, the much needed clothes and so on...

However, the mystery of this novel is Posy. The book mostly follows Pauline's evolution, and as Petrova is usually in the same theatrical pieces as Pauline is, we don't get to "see" much of Posy. Her training with Madame Fidolia is kept under secret too, so we can only guess what kind of ballet moves she is taught.

The book is mostly about how these three girls are growing up, balancing studying, training for their careers and actually working as performers on stage. It is, consequently, slow-paced and descriptive, however it doesn't lack in humorous moments. For instance, when Gum (Great Uncle Matthew) brings the orphan Pauline to her 16 year-old niece, Sylvia, who is reluctant in taking her, he says:

I thought all women like children!

Posy is also a "little monster" who mocks everyone's behaviour by imitating them in a hilarious way, a "talent" of her most visibile in the second half of the book.

I recommend "Ballet Shoes" to children of all ages, and to adults who want to remember their childhood.

Last week I didn't show you anything because... I simply didn't get any new book. However, this week has been crazy and I have got much much more books than I have ever thought I would. So... brace yourselves!

Diane Gaston mailed me two of her historical romance books, as I won a giveaway. They're signed and very lovely and I can't wait to read them! Thank you, Diane!

From Romanian Publishing House "Nemira", I bought an anthology of seven love stories written by classical authors, a book called "Painter of Science" by Georgina Harding (the action in this book takes place in Romania), and the third book of the "Temeraire" series by Naomi Novik.

In terms of ebooks... things have been very crazy indeed. I've practically scared myself when I've seen how many I got. I will only show you the covers, as you can read the titles and authors directly from the pictures. Also, before you think I spent a lot of money on these, know I haven't paid a cent, as these were all free on Amazon at the time I got them, or were given to me by the authors.

I hope your week has been full of books too and I would love to hear what you bought and received.
